옛날 어느 나라에 왕이 있었지요  
그의 나라는 계속해서 눈이 녹지 않아 
제발 봄이 오게 해달라고 부탁했답니다 
하지만 그 왕은 사악하고 인색했기에 
봄은 오지 않았고 그 나라의 차가운 겨울 
들판엔 아무것도 자라지 못했지요  
그러다 한 여행자가 와서 
단지 하룻밤 묵을 곳과 먹을 것을 구하며 
문 앞에서 도움을 요청했답니다 
그러자 왕은 하인을 시켜 
그 여행자를 쫓아 버렸죠  
4월의 눈동자를 가진 소녀를 말이에요

오, 그녀는 거친 바람과 눈보라가  
휘몰아치는 차가운 겨울 밤을 헤치며 
정처없이 나아갔답니다  
아, 그녀는 계속해서 말을 달렸어요 
누군가 4월의 눈동자를 가진 그 소녀를  도와주면 좋으련만

그녀는 밤새도록 말을 달리다 
숲속에 사는 한 초라한 사람의 집에서 
흘러나오는 불빛을 찾아오게 되었지요 
그는 그녀를 안으로 데려와 
난롯가에 눕혔지만 그녀는 죽고 말았답니다 
그는 그녀를 정성스레 묻어 주었지요 
흰 눈에 덮힌 온 세상에 
다시 환한 아침이 밝았고 
그 사람이 그녀가 잠들어 있는 곳에 가 보았을 때 그의 마당에는 
4월의 눈동자를 가진 그 소녀의 무덤 위로 
꽃들이 만발해 있었어요

참으로 오래전에 해마다 사월이면 이 노래를 줄기차게 들었더랬지요.

지금쯤이면 교정에 벚꽃이 만발하고, 개나리도 피어서 성질 급한 친구들은 반팔로 다니기도 하고요.

우리 땐, 음악다방이 많아서,

수업이 끝나면 다들 우르르 몰려가서 커피 한 잔 시켜 놓고는 몇 시간을 죽치고 앉아서

팝송이란 팝송은 다 신청해서 듣곤 했습니다.

때로,

그 아련하면서도 풋풋하던 그 시절이,

해마다 사월이면 그립습니다.
