바다에의 열병, 존 메이스필드

Sea Fever                                                                                                                   John Masefield (United Kingdom 1878~1967) I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a gray mist on the sea's face and a gray dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying. And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life. To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.     바다에의 열병                                               존 메이스필드 (영국 1878~1967) 나는 다시 바다로 가야겠다. 그 외로운 바다와 하늘로, 내가 원하는 건, 높다란 배 한 척과 그를 인도할 별 하나, 그리고 물살을 차는 키 바퀴와 바람의 노래와 흔들리는 흰 돛. 수면에 깔리는 잿빛 노을 그리고 동트는 잿빛 아침.   나는 아무래도 다시 바다로 가야겠다. 혹은 거칠게 혹은 맑게, 내가 원하는 건, 거부할 수 없이 밀려오는 조수 같은 물결이 부르는 흰 구름 떠도는 바람찬 날. 그리고 흩날리는 물보라와 부풀어 오르는 물거품, 갈매기의 울음소리 나는 아무래도 다시 바다로 가야겠다. 떠도는 집시의 시절로 내가 원하는 건, 칼날 같은 바람이 부는 곳, 갈매기와 고래가 가는 길. 껄껄대는 뱃사람들의 신나는 이야기와 그리고 기나긴 당번시간이 끝난 뒤 깊은 잠과 달콤한 꿈.
